The project was developed as part of a wider brief exploring heritage, identity, and overlooked Welsh folk crafts.
My approach was both documentary and interpretative. I worked closely with Barnaby (@secksygreb / @bxrnxby_prend), a contemporary artist and fellow student at UWE (Fine Art), observing and recording the chair-making process through video, analogue photography, and in-depth discussion.
The final outcome is a B5, perfect-bound printed publication that captures the making of a Welsh stick chair by Barnaby. Through photography, interview extracts, annotation, and typographic detailing, the book offers a slow, observational look at the tools, gestures, and atmosphere of the workshop environment. It not only documents the physical process but also reflects on broader themes of tradition, utility, labour, and cultural continuity.

This project deconstructs the traditional symbols found in Welsh lovespoons, transforming them into bold, modern patterns. Rooted in heritage yet forward-looking in execution, the work explores themes of love, luck, and human connection. By abstracting and reinterpreting these historic motifs, the project bridges the gap between craft and contemporary visual language. Presented through print-based outcomes, it celebrates cultural symbolism while questioning how traditions can evolve in design today.

FlipBook
This flip book is a personal reflection on my upbringing within the Welsh-medium education system. Through sequential imagery and storytelling, it captures the everyday moments, cultural nuances, and emotional texture of growing up in a Welsh-speaking environment. Each page unfolds part of my lived experience, exploring both the beauty and complexities of learning and living through the Welsh language. The project serves as a visual memory archive — intimate, nostalgic, and rooted in linguistic identity.

Print
This zine celebrates the intricate patterns, symbolic motifs, and deep-rooted craft traditions found in Welsh quilt-making. Through a modern design lens, it explores the cultural and historical significance stitched into these textiles — from their bold geometry to their role in storytelling and community. The mockup presents a visual tribute to Wales’s rich textile heritage, blending research, pattern study, and contemporary layout to honour a tradition passed down through generations.
